What Makes Savage Worlds Special?
Imagine if every action movie, anime series, and comic book used the same basic "physics engine" - that's Savage Worlds! Whether you're swinging through New York like Spider-Man, piloting a mecha like in Evangelion, or exploring dungeons like in D&D, Savage Worlds handles it all with the same elegant rules.
Real World Analogy
Think of Savage Worlds like a smartphone. Just as your phone can run thousands of different apps using the same operating system, Savage Worlds can run any genre of adventure using the same core rules. Want to play pirates today and space marines tomorrow? Same rules, different "apps"!
The Core Philosophy: Fast! Furious! Fun!
Fast!
Combat moves like a Jackie Chan fight scene - quick, dynamic, and decisive. No more 3-hour battles against a single orc!
Example: In The Avengers movie, the Battle of New York takes about 30 minutes of screen time. In Savage Worlds, you can actually play that entire battle in about the same time!
Furious!
Action is over-the-top and cinematic. Heroes don't just hit enemies - they leap off buildings, swing from chandeliers, and deliver witty one-liners!
Example: Think of how Legolas slides down stairs on a shield while shooting arrows in Lord of the Rings. That's not just allowed in Savage Worlds - it's encouraged!
Fun!
Rules get out of the way of the story. If it would be awesome in a movie, you can probably do it in Savage Worlds!
Example: When Naruto creates hundreds of shadow clones for an epic battle, Savage Worlds says "Roll for it!" not "Let me check page 247 of supplement 3..."
The Dice System
Savage Worlds uses ALL the dice in your collection, not just the d20. Each die represents a different level of ability:
Target Numbers and Success
In Savage Worlds, you're usually trying to beat a 4. It's that simple!
Success Levels
- Failure (Less than 4): Like when Wile E. Coyote's plans backfire
- Success (4+): Like when Iron Man's repulsors work as intended
- Raise (8+): Like when Ichigo unleashes his Bankai - extra awesome!
- Multiple Raises (12+, 16+, etc.): Like One Punch Man... well, punching
Wild Cards and Extras
Wild Cards (Heroes & Villains)
These are the main characters - the Avengers, the Straw Hat Pirates, the Fellowship of the Ring!
- Roll an extra d6 (Wild Die) with every trait roll
- Take the better result
- Can take multiple wounds
- Get Bennies (more on this later!)
Examples: Goku, Batman, Frodo, Naruto, Wonder Woman
Extras (Supporting Cast)
The stormtroopers, ninja mooks, and orc armies of the world
- Roll single dice only
- One wound takes them out
- No Bennies
- Exist to make heroes look awesome
Examples: Random ninjas in Naruto, Chitauri in Avengers, Orcs in LOTR
Bennies - Your Luck Points
Bennies are like "plot armor" or "main character energy" - they represent those moments when the hero digs deep and succeeds against all odds!
What Can You Do With Bennies?
- Reroll any Trait roll: Like when Spider-Man's spider-sense kicks in at the last second
- Soak wounds: That moment when the hero gets back up after a devastating hit
- Recover from Shaken: Shaking off the effects like Captain America saying "I can do this all day"
- Influence the story: Minor narrative control, like "Good thing I brought my grappling hook!"
